**** The story of the GMC Syclone and GMC Typhoon is one of the 1990s' wildest automotive experiments—a pair of low-budget, turbocharged factory street-brawlers that shocked the supercar world. The Performance: It dashed from 0–60 mph in 4.6 to 4.9 seconds, famously out-accelerating and out-braking a contemporary Ferrari 348 TS in magazine tests ****
The Inspiration: The concept began with a GM employee inspired by the legendary turbocharged Buick Grand National. They wanted to drop a turbo V6 into a small utility vehicle.
• The Name: It was originally spelled "Cyclone," but the badge had to be tweaked to Syclone because Mercury owned the trademark.
• Bypassing Bureaucracy: Instead of waiting through a slow, $200-million corporate development cycle, the team hired outside engineering specialists—specifically Production Automotive Services (PAS) in Troy, Michigan, and *** ASC McLaren ***.
They used clever parts-bin engineering (borrowing the all-wheel-drive system from a Chevy Astro van and boost gauges from a Pontiac Sunbird) to bring the truck to life in about 18 months for a fraction of the cost
• The Formula: Built on a compact GMC Typhoon Both used the Sonoma/S-15 pickup platform, it packed a turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 pushing 280 horsepower and 350–360 lb-ft of torque through a full-time all-wheel-drive system.
• The Performance: It dashed from 0–60 mph in 4.6 to 4.9 seconds, famously out-accelerating and out-braking a contemporary Ferrari 348 TS in magazine tests.
• The Catch: Every Syclone came painted black with red interior accents. Despite its supercar-slaying stats, it had a tiny 500-lb payload and nearly zero towing capacity, making it a terrible actual work truck. GMC built 2,998 units for the 1991 model year (plus a handful of 1992s and special editions like the Marlboro Syclones) before moving on.
Total Built: 4,697 units total across its 1992–1993 run, with roughly 2,500 produced for the 1992 model year.
